Looks that way. I think Univision wants to keep everything else going, at least in the near term. Hopefully they’ll jettison Jezebel, or at least their writers.

I'm pretty sure that if Univision is shutting down Gawker, they may be done with Kinja as well. And if Kinja is done...

Just Gawker.com, not Gawker Media.
No point in buying it (and its readers) to shutter it all.

Ah,you’re right. But my hypothesis that Univision would drop Kinja remains. Maybe they might move to a Facebook-based comments section, which is what Fusion.net (owned by Univision Communications) uses. There is almost zero incentive for the new owners to rely on Kinja software after this purchase (as opposed to Nick Denton owning the separate company that licenses Kinja out to GM at this time).
If you’re Univision, why would you pay someone royalties for commenting software? We know that it helps drive loyal readership, but the new owners might not care.

Is (was) Kinja owned by Gawker Media? If so, it’s presumably now the property of Univision. I was always slightly confused as to whether there was any legal separation between the two.

Hell, I don’t even get the hate for Gawker. Not that I like everything they write, but the pure hatred is something I don’t get.

I’ve never been un-greyed there. I quit making comments because I quit caring after a while. Jalop and Oppo is all that really matters. Gizmodo is cool too.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I dislike gossipy bullshit in general. Plus they’ve done some incredibly petty things to people who didn’t deserve anything (e.g. outing that Conde Nast exec.) It’s one thing to go after people who try to shape public policy in a way that runs counter to their own personal conduct, and completely another to try to trash people’s lives because they work for a competitor. I guess it has something to do with Denton himself; there seems to be a nasty side of British culture which says that the minute someone gets a bit of fame or notability, the media has to try to destroy them.
the other thing I dislike about Gawker is the sheer arrogance of assholes like Hamilton Nolan and Brendan O’Connor. They honestly seem to think it’s their place to tell us all how to live. Y’know, because they write for a blog.

“the sheer arrogance of assholes like Hamilton Nolan and Brendan O’Connor. They honestly seem to think it’s their place to tell us all how to live. Y’know, because they write for a blog.”
This is the sole reason I quit that site. I hope & pray HamNo gets placed as FAAAAAAAAAAR away from Jalopnik as possible.

Exactly what I was wondering.
Kinja (as we know) is just the publishing platform that is used by Gawker Media, that Nick Denton guy from Gawker and someone else created it. However, but it’s still kinda unclear if Kinja was split apart from Gawker Media at some point.

I am 95% certain that Kinja is a separate entity from Gawker Media.

The secret to getting let in is making super liberal comments and making death threats to anything not super left. As a moderate I was never accepted because I wasn't extreme enough.

Anyways, fuck gawker. Good riddance.

I can’t imagine they would. Fusion probably only used Facebook because they didn’t have a better solution. User base on your own, native platform (so you can track them and better target to advertisers) is very valuable. This is why Facebook is so powerful and rich. Why would Univision give up its Kinja “captives” to Facebook. Seems that more likely Fusion.net would become a Kinja-based property.
Now if the sale didn’t include Kinja KFT as you seem to allude to, it’s a totally different story...

Kinja KFT filed for bankruptcy on June 12th - not sure if it was part of the sale or not, but you’d have to assume it was. What worth do Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Jalopnik, etc. have without the platform they’re all built on?

From what I’ve found, Kinja is owned by Blogwire Hungary, which is owned by the CAYMAN ISLANDS-based Gawker Media Group Inc. The US-based Gawker Media LLC is owned by the Cayman Islands holding group.
So, technically, Gawker Media LLC and Blogwire are separate entities with the same Caymanian owner (who is, ultimately, Denton). I don’t think that the Cayman Islands holding company is the one that filed bankruptcy, just the US-based Gawker Media subsidiary. Thus, Kinja very well might not be part of the assets taken by Univision.
Ain’t international business ownership architecture fun?

See my other response about the Gawker Media properties being worth very little without the platform that they’re all based on. Seems like it would have to be part of the sale.

Some of their writing is just a joke, and some of their FP commenters are headcases.
Now, the people on their version of Oppo are fine. I’ve seen a number of occasions where there was even collecting facepalming over what was written on their FP.

I guess my point is that it’s a site by women, for women. I know it’s not for me, and I don’t care about probably 95% of what they publish, so I just- you know- don’t go there.
although the Deadspin-Jezebel switch on April 1 was entertaining.
